During the 14 week course we have 6 Teacher Consultants come in and present their writing lessons that work for them. This semester the presentation topics varied from peer revision, voice in non fiction writing, multicultural issues in student writing, sketch journals, dialogue journals, and author as mentor. They also read 4 articles on writing (Freewriting by Elbow, Journaling by Toby Fulwiler, Revision by Murray, Writing/Helping Circles, and Dialogue Journals by Joy Kreft Peyton). They meet in writing groups 6 times to share and revise their pieces to publish in a final anthology (fiction, essay, poetry, memoir, their choice). The point is they go through the writing process as they are asking their own ESOL students to do. That is how they are writer's teaching writing. They read two books by the authors I listed and we have 2 book discussions. Teachers respond to what they read and see through reflection responses or process writing. They write how it relates to their own writing experiences or teaching. They are not traditional "book reports". We want to know how they will internalize this new information and make it their own practice. Hope this helps. Would it be possible to see your syllabus? This is the first attempt of this class and I modified it so as to not be insulting to EFL students who already think they can write, even though many cannot write well. I know there is no 'right' syllabus or way--I've taught for 20 years, but I think this is very important. I will definitely look at the site. Thanks. T Tommy B.
