An excellent resource that can be downloaded free of charge:

Canadian Language Benchmarks 2000: ESL For Literacy Learners available at
www.language.ca under link to "Benchmarks". Copyright: Centre for Canadian
Language Benchmarks and the Government of Manitoba.

The document defines "What is ESL Literacy" including pre-literate,
non-literate, semi-literate, non-roman alphabet learners.

The document also provides suggestions for ESL Literacy Methodology and
Development and Selection of appropriate materials.

The benchmarks are organized in these phases:
Foundation Phase - addresses pre-reading and pre-writing strategies
Phase 1 - Initial and developing levels
Phase 2 - Initial and developing levels
Phase 3 - Initial and developing levels

Each Phase is organized into these areas:
Sample Tasks & Practical Examples of each (lots of ideas for development of
activities)
Language competencies
Literacy competencies

Hello there-

I have taught ESL for about 3 years and have just been
handed the responsibility of teaching Adult Literacy.
To be honest I don't even have a clue where to
start...and so I am seeking advice and/or resources
that may assist me in teaching literacy.

All advice welcomed.
Thank you!
Colleen
