This comes under the heading of anecdotal evidence, but I have to say that
our bicultural staff are extremely valuable. And the instructor who is from
Mexico (the other is from Puerto Rico) where most of our students are from,
makes a significant contribution, not only to the students, but also to the
staff.

For the students, he can be something of a role model, because he knows what
they are going through and what they are up against. He has some credibility
when he gives advice on how to do things. And since he used to teach in
Mexico, he knows the context and cultural expectations of how that works.

The value to the rest of us is that he can often be an advocate for the
students and explain things to us about why they are doing the things they
are doing, or not doing other things. Since students trust him and can
confide in him, he often hears things that they don't tell the rest of us,
so we can get a more complete picture of what's going on with a particular
family.

Subject: [NIFL-ESL:9926] Staff Diversity in ABE ESOL Programs

Dear Colleagues,

A week or so ago I posted a message inquiring about the issue of staff
diversity in ESOL programs for adults. I am looking for information on how
other states, programs, or individuals might have dealt with this issue.
