A consortium of basic skills programs in the Seattle area has as one of our activities a speakers bureau. We were awarded an Americorps literacy position to coordinate the effort. Supriya Ray, our current coordinator, has done an excellent job of building the program so that there are currently about 30 student "ambassadors" available to speak to community groups. Before they go out to speak, they craft their speeches and are given a significant amount of training in public speaking. Just a couple of weeks ago, I attended the dress rehearsal at which all the speakers presented their speeches and it was both validating and energizing. There is a Speakers' Bureau web site which you could check out for further information: northonline.sccd.ctc.edu/speakersbureau Donna Miller-Parker, Director Essential Skills Programs Shoreline Community College 16101 Greenwood Avenue North Seattle, WA 98133 (206) 546-4788 -----Original Message----- From: William Zaner [mailto:wzaner@hotmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, March 10, 2004 11:20 PM To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: [NIFL-ESL:10004] Creating a speakers bureau We're a small non-profit providing adult ESL serivces in our county (Sonoma CA --pop. approx. 250,000). Our board has decided to create a speakers bureau in order to let the general public know what we do, how we do it, what our future plans are, etc. We see this as one part of an overall marketing program to raise our profile in the community. This doesn't seem an especially difficult task, but before we go off re-inventing the wheel does anyone has any "tips'--do's or dont's- they might offer based on their own experience with this sort of endeavor? Many thanks in advance for the help.
