Laurie and everyone:

There are over 80 digests, briefs, and Q & As -- most following the research to practice framework & many very recent-- on the Web site of the National Center for ESL Literacy Education (NCLE). They are available to be downoaded at: http://www.cal.org/ncle/digests/

Recent topics include second language acquisition and adult English language learners, teaching reading to adult English language learners, working with literacy-level learners, health literacy, and assessment.

The most recent, is a brief entitled "Issues in Improving Immigrant Workers Adult English Language Skills." http://www.cal.org/ncle/whatnew.htm. It looks at the stats on labor participation by immigrants and finds that 54% hold low income jobs and English literacy and fluency seem have a positive influence on economic self-sufficiency. The digest then explores how immigrant workers' English language skills can be improved in the context of workplace instruction. The brief also discusses issues that need to be addressed in order to improve English language instruction at the workplace. It can be downloaded at http://www.cal.org/ncle/digests/Workplaceissues.htm

It is also available from NCLE at the address below.

The ERIC Digests are very informative and provide practical applications in
adult ESL. Providing In-Services wherein faculty can share what they've
gleaned from assigned readings is a great way for teachers to learn by
connecting theory w/practice. There are some great digests to choose from.
