Pax et bonum! (peace & goodness)

I would say continue to train on the job. It is very unlikely you would be
able to recoup your expenses in getting an MA in TESOL while working as an
adult instructor. If you like where you're at, enjoy it.

I am currently working on my MA (and certification), but that would be used
as a backup, since my employment in a non-profit is extremely unpredictable.

Ciao!

Maureen and others,
I'm in a similar situation. I have a graduate degree in adult education but
no formal esl training. I wonder at times whether I am doing the best I can
for the students. THe population I service are immigrants from all over the
world, and many of them are very eager to learn and my sense is they would
learn no matter who was in the classroom instructing or guiding. My adult
education background certainly helps me understand pedagogically "adult
learning" but dynamics of second language acquistion is most certainly a
missing piece for me. I have been reading and keeping tuned in to posts on
this listserv and it has served me well, however I continue to try to
figure out professionally my next step. Should I seek credentials in esl the
more traditional way or should I continue to "train on the job ". I want to
stay consistent with the effort for this profession to be more solidified
and that is my dilemma. any feedback would be appreciated.
esther shupe
