Sandra,

Instead of Powerpoint presentations, why not use items from everyday
life ("realia") that they will encounter, ie:

Bus schedules
Paycheck Stubs
Newspapers
Bills
Report Cards
Job applications
Want Ads
Classified Ads (apt for rent, etc)
Boxes from grocery stores...

You get the idea. I think that in practice, these everyday items that
they come into contact with will be more helpful (as well as tangible)
than Powerpoint which will be more abstract. Students can hold and read
an aspirin bottle, it's a little more difficult to do the same with
Ppoint.

Anyway, my two cents on the topic.
