While a map or globe might be of interest so she could show you where she is from in Korea, it seems doubtful to me that learning World Geography is what she wants or needs to know. Does she know the alphabet of English? If not, that is where to begin. If she knows the alphabet, but is a beginner reader otherwise, you may want to start with those things most essential such as labels on medicine, food, clothes, etc; also signs around town. You may want to work on applications and bills. Start out with these everyday things. If she can already do this, then find some simplified readings that are available in ESL books such as True Stories in the News or in the simplified newspaper News for You. Ask your coordinator or librarian if any of these are available. If not, see if there are any ABE materials available. Terry Pruett-Said Adult Ed teacher Michigan
