I agree with John.  focus on the real objects.  Not 
only from the community but also from their work.

Can you visit / Have you visited their workplaces?
This could give you some ideas for practical work
vocabulary: nouns (objects in the work environment),
verbs (what are the various people doing? what's 
happening?).  As appropriate add adjectives, adverbs,
prepositions, etc.  Teaching the vocabulary in 
sentences introduces grammar and sentence patterns.

What are some of the conversations that they will 
hear and/or need to participate in at work / in the 
community?  Practice some of these with them and 
then let them role play the situations and ad lib.  
[This can lead to discussions of appropriate and 
inappropriate language in various situations.]

Sandra,

Instead of Powerpoint presentations, why not use items from everyday
life ("realia") that they will encounter, ie:

Bus schedules
Paycheck Stubs
Newspapers
Bills
Report Cards
Job applications
Want Ads
Classified Ads (apt for rent, etc)
Boxes from grocery stores...

You get the idea. I think that in practice, these everyday items that
they come into contact with will be more helpful (as well as tangible)
than Powerpoint which will be more abstract. Students can hold and
read an aspirin bottle, it's a little more difficult to do the same
with Ppoint.

Anyway, my two cents on the topic.
