Hello Listmembers.

Yesterday I attended the Institute of Medicine's event to mark the the
release of its report Health Literacy: A Prescription to End Confusion. I
was happy to find that the report emphasizes the importance of adult
literacy and ESL programs' inclusion in efforts to address adult health
literacy problems in the United States. Understanding of health literacy in
the report is broad in scope and encompasses cultural, problem-solving, and
self-advocacy skills in addition to basic literacy skills.

IOM board members emphasized the need to advocate for increased funding for
health literacy efforts from private and government sources. If your
program is interested in seeking funding for a health literacy project,
traditional funders for health literacy- and health disparities-related
issues have included:

Pfizer Foundation

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
http://www.rwjf.org/

Commonwealth Fund

Agency for Health Care Research and Quality
