For those who are looking to expand their professional skills or education, the Workforce Development Campus at James Madison University offers certificates in workforce and workplace education and development. This program is offered under the directorship of Dr. Diane Foucar-Szocki and the Virginia Workforce Improvement Network. All WDC courses run in seven-week blocks – and each course is delivered online, utilizing Blackboard, a distance- learning medium. The courses are facilitated with active instruction and feedback, useful content and activities, and peer-to-peer distributed learning. WDC students enjoy a wealth of resource sharing and networking as they learn. Our discussion boards and virtual classroom “chat” are lively and informative. WDC prides itself on technical and staff support. Our office is staffed 8:00-5:00 Monday through Friday, but we are also available after normal business hours and on the weekends for those participants who may need assistance. Introduction to Workforce Education is a prerequisite to all certificate paths except ESOL Program Developer (ESOL in the Workplace is a prerequisite for the ESOL certificate). Certificates are available in: Program Development. Program Developers meet with employees, learns what the employer needs, helps the employer determine the kind of program that will best meet those needs, contracts the program, arranges the program, and evaluates its effectiveness. ESOL Program Development. Addresses the specific needs of establishing programs in a diverse workplace, including native and non-native development needs, scheduling, and program design. Curriculum Design. Curriculum Designers design learning experiences that assist the employer and the employees to accomplish their goals. The designer links the needs of the employer with the needs of the employees to create a program that works for entry-level, high school, and technical school prepared employees. Instruction. Instructors lead programs and teach at or through the workplace. The Instructional Specialist works with employees to learn what is needed to accomplish the goals of the employer and to assist employees in becoming a stronger and better-prepared worker.
