For those who are looking to expand their professional
skills or education, the Workforce Development Campus at
James Madison University offers certificates in workforce
and workplace education and development. This program is
offered under the directorship of Dr. Diane Foucar-Szocki
and the Virginia Workforce Improvement Network.

All WDC courses run in seven-week blocks – and each course
is delivered online, utilizing Blackboard, a distance-
learning medium. The courses are facilitated with active
instruction and feedback, useful content and activities, and
peer-to-peer distributed learning. WDC students enjoy a
wealth of resource sharing and networking as they learn.
Our discussion boards and virtual classroom “chat” are
lively and informative.

WDC prides itself on technical and staff support. Our
office is staffed 8:00-5:00 Monday through Friday, but we
are also available after normal business hours and on the
weekends for those participants who may need assistance.

Classes begin May 10th. For more information or to register
visit the WDC website at www.jmu.edu/wdc .

Continuing Education Units are offered. Completion of any
WDC course will earn you four CEU’s.

Introduction to Workforce Education is a prerequisite to all
certificate paths except ESOL Program Developer (ESOL in the
Workplace is a prerequisite for the ESOL certificate).

Certificates are available in:

Program Development. Program Developers meet with
employees, learns what the employer needs, helps the
employer determine the kind of program that will best meet
those needs, contracts the program, arranges the program,
and evaluates its effectiveness.

ESOL Program Development. Addresses the specific needs of
establishing programs in a diverse workplace, including
native and non-native development needs, scheduling, and
program design.

Curriculum Design. Curriculum Designers design learning
experiences that assist the employer and the employees to
accomplish their goals. The designer links the needs of the
employer with the needs of the employees to create a program
that works for entry-level, high school, and technical
school prepared employees.

Instruction. Instructors lead programs and teach at or
through the workplace. The Instructional Specialist works
with employees to learn what is needed to accomplish the
goals of the employer and to assist employees in becoming a
stronger and better-prepared worker.
