A few months ago I announced my bilingual website for
beginning Spanish speaking adults: www.pumarosa.com
Since then, I have been using it in two classes, along
with regular instruction. The results are very
positive.
The website is not only bilingual, it is phonetic and
interactive - with sound. In other words it focuses on
teaching pronunciation.
I hope some of you find it useful.

Hi,

For the second year in a row, California Literacy is
sponsoring a national competition. We're looking for
a Keynote Speaker for our 39th Annual State Literacy
Conference, and we'd like to know what it would take
for the next President to be considered "The Literacy
President."

Please see the announcement below, and please feel
free to share this with anyone in the field of
literacy. We're eager for national perspectives, and
are not limited to a California speaker.

Peace,

Matthew Scelza

Keynote Search 2004

California Literacy

We believe that the adult education and literacy
system is at a critical moment in its history. That
belief is reflected in our conference theme--"Bridges
to the Future: Information, Access, and Action".
Future services are threatened by budget cuts and
different priorities. At the same time, politicians
are rushing to embrace "standards" and
"accountability." What to do about it?

We're looking for you to answer the challenge. The
prize: You get to be the Keynote Speaker at our 39th
Annual State Conference in San Francisco on October
14, 2004.

That's right. No more talking heads. No more leaving
the conference general session thinking, "I could do
better than that". You're the Keynote Speaker, and you
get to tell us exactly what's right, what's wrong, and
what we can do to improve adult education and
literacy.

This is a contest. We're asking you to submit your
best response to these questions:

"What would it take for the next President to be
considered ‘The Literacy President’? What policies and
actions would be required to earn that title?"

Give us your answer on one side of one sheet of paper,
with one-inch margins and 12-point font. To keep it
simple, we’re not reading any submissions over the
one-page limit.

If you win, you’ll present the keynote address to a
statewide audience of adult education and literacy
providers on Thursday, October 14th at the Opening
Session of our 39th Annual State Conference. We'll
also pay for your airfare, hotel, and food during the
three days of the Conference—that’s a free trip to San
Francisco!

Every submission will be considered for publication in
an anthology of responses to this query.

Are you up to the challenge?

Deadline: July 15, 2004
