Lynda Terrill lterrill@cal.org ******* November 15, 2004 The National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL), a private, non-profit organization located in Louisville, Kentucky, seeks a self-motivated professional with excellent communication, organization and interpersonal skills to fill the following full-time position. Director, Hispanic Family Literacy Institute (HFLI) The position of Director of the Hispanic Family Literacy Institute will be NCFL's lead resource on English language learners and will aggregate the organization's growing knowledge from individual projects into a scaled nationwide initiative. This person will: Ø Gather the most effective knowledge about English language learners and language acquisition and craft that knowledge into strategies for the nation as well as into formalized institutional knowledge for NCFL. Ø Develop premier partnerships with other organizations that support the needs of English language learners. Ø Monitor and synthesize emerging trends and research regarding education for recent immigrants and their families and design dissemination strategies for the nation. Ø Provide leadership in developing organizational, instructional and curriculum resource materials that support the implementation of high quality ESL family literacy programs. The dissemination strategies mentioned above are pivotal to the Institute galvanizing the nation's attention in a way that will advise and influence policy decisions at the state and federal levels. NCFL plans for dissemination strategies include: "issue briefs" circulated to the media, key persons of influence, as well as federal and state education staff members and "white papers" regarding emerging best practices and trends distributed to opinion leaders throughout the nation. Requirements: Applicant must have proven leadership and organizational skills, the ability to coordinate project development, and the ability to interact with staff at the federal level and at the local school-based level. The selected applicant must have a passion for working to meet the educational needs of immigrant families. Applicant must be bi-lingual, with ability to speak fluently in Spanish, as well as have a good command of Hispanic/Latino culture. Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Spanish and demonstrated ability to make clear and effective presentations. Education: Master's Degree required, preferably in an ESL-related field. Other: Extensive travel is involved and candidate must be willing to relocate to the Louisville, Kentucky area.
