I knew this information had to be out there and I found it by Google-ing:

This is a list by state of requirements by state for teaching in public schools. The requirements for teaching in higher education or for adult education are different.
Having an MA is very helpful at all levels of ESL teaching and administration and may qualify you for public education without doing an entire education degree. In CO, with a BA in Eng. Lit (no educ. classes) + a Dip. in Second Language Teaching and an MA/ Applied Linguistics, I took a qualifiying test in ESL and was given a credential for teaching K-12 ESL.

I'm in a Master's program because I want to teach in the US as well as overseas.
When I was in Japan, the certification they wanted was TESOL. With a Master's overseas, one could teach in the college level in Japan or Italy.
Currently, in the DC area, to assure a job a teacher should be certified in a content area with an additional certification in ESL. You still can get a job but most of the jobs are moving west with the new immigrants. Right now I am told that the largest groups of new immigrants are in Harrisonburg.

Holladay
