Charlotte has a huge Latino population -- about 50,000. I'm not involved w/UNCC but I know there is an active group of international students there. Your friends should also find help from the instructors at the English Language Institute at UNCC. There's a very active Hispanic council here, 2 Latino newspapers (the papers are free & found on the campus as well as many shopping areas) and International House (it offers conversation groups as well as social interaction). The newcomers will find that many rental agents (apts) have Spanish-speaking agents as do the banks & many other businesses; there is also a Yellow Pages in Spanish. They can also check www.gocharlotte.com Good luck! Dottie Shattuck Charlotte, NC & Tri-District Adult Edu.
