The Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks has developed a national nursing
language assessment tool called Canadian English Language Benchmark
Assessment for Nurses (CELBAN) which has been approved by most of the
provincial licensing bodies in Canada for use with Registered Nurses and
Registered Practical Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses.

In the first phase of the development of CELBAN a study was done in the
language benchmark levels of the nursing profession across Canada. The
report that resulted is proving to be an excellent resource to support the
development of curriculum for bridging programs for nurses as it itemizes
numerous tasks nurses are expected to do in the 4 skill areas of reading,
writing, speaking and listening. You can download a copy of this research
report and find out more about CELBAN (including an online readiness
self-assessment tool) at http://www.CELBAN.org.

For a copy of the Phase 1 report go to this website and click on "Resources"
and then "History, Background and Research" and scroll to the bottom.

Also offline versions of the online readiness self-assessment tool can be
printed and use in bridging programs.

Subject: [NIFL-ESL:10945] ESL Bridge Curricula to Allied Health Courses

We are going to develop an ESL bridge curriculum to Allied Health
Courses for careers such as Medical Assistant, Nurses' Assistant,
Nursing, Phlebotomy Technician or Dental Assistants. I would appreciate
any information on current ESL curricula or on programs offered in the
NYC area I could visit. Another question I have for ESL practitioners
is what were the goals of your courses and how did they differentiate
from similar courses geared towards native speakers?

Thanks very much,
Melinda Thomsen
