When people do not know what it is that they don't know but need to know, they can't set realistic goals. On the other hand, as the literacy expert you can determine what specific word recognition problems exist using such tools as AVKO's "Suggested Order for Diagnosis and Remediation of the Simple, Fancy, and Insane Words."
