I thought it would be valuable to you to know about a family literacy
program being done through Caldwell Community College in Lenoir, NC.
That program is housed at the public schools, each selected on the basis
of need. Families congregate around 5:00 after the workday. Many
different activities are planned for parents, children, and family
groups. For instance, families eat together and at the same time
practice etiquette and communication skills. The meals are provided by
delis and restaurants at no cost to the project using food that otherwise
would be discarded the day before. A play time is worked into the
schedule. Adults receive instruction in basic skills, GED and AHS
curriculum. Younger children receive appropriate learning experiences
and older children are tutored with their school needs. Sometimes movies
are shown, trips are taken, or family chores are done such as mending
clothes, preparing budgets, shopping lists, or planning nutritious
meals. This program has been so successful that it has grown from one to
three sites in just three years. Much work is required but much success
is gained.

Hope this information is helpful.
