Sponsored by the National Institute For Literacy (NIFL) and managed at the National Center For Family Literacy (NCFL), this list features all aspects of family literacy. To post a message, send your e-mail message to NIFL-FAMILY@literacy.nifl.gov. When you respond to a message, include a bit of that other message to orient readers. Remember to sign your message because not all e-mail systems include header information. And if you wish to communicate privately with an individual, be certain your message is addressed to that person only and not to the entire NIFL-FAMILY list. As always, I invite you to introduce yourselves; please share your thoughts and questions. Thinking it might be time to reintroduce myself... I moved to Louisville KY to work at NCFL 14 months ago. In addition to being manager of this list, I'm involved with program evalaution (writing projects and training activites). An evaluation primer, Assessing Program Effectiveness In Family Literacy Programs, is scheduled for publication, January 1996 (but I may eat my words). Otherwise, I'm wrapped up with NIFL's Adult Literacy System Reform Initiative. The basis for this endeavor may be found in Equipped For the Future (if you would like to read what adult learners said about Education Goal 6, I'll send you the report). NCFL is collaborating in a 1 year planning project with NIFL and seven other groups nationwide to research the following questions: 1. What do adults need to know and be able to do in order to be successful as citizens, workers, and parents/family members? 2. Once we have reached consensus on the "competencies behind the competencies", what are the implications for the adult literacy/education system? 3. How will we (re)structure programs/instruction? 4. How will we measure growth/success? 5. How will we report results so that the info is understood by and useful to everyone with a stake in literacy theory/practice? NCFL's project addresses learners in their role as parents and family members. For more information on this project or NCFL's publications and training activities, please contact me at NCFL_RGS@aol.com. Thanks and have a good weekend!
