New member intro --
I'm Rick Ludeman of Portland, Oregon. Over the years I've volunteered as a
tutor with a variety of literacy programs. I'm also the father of two young
sons to whom I try to read every night.
As I learn more about literacy programs in my state I am consistently
impressed with the dedication and innovation of the people and programs. At
the same time, I have also noticed that efforts sometimes appear fragmented
and, I assume, agencies occasionally feel as if they're "reinventing the
wheel."
I'd like to hear from other members about ways to bring about synergy and
achieve leverage. I believe there are models for statewide organizations that
act as one or more of the following: information clearinghouse, focal point
for advocacy, technical consultants. I welcome your thoughts, leads, and
contacts. Thanks.

It's November and I'd like to welcome the 21 new subscribers to the list. If
you haven't introduced your self, please plan to do so soon.
I am Robin Jurczyk, moderator of nifl-family and family literacy specialist
at the National Center for Family Literacy. That means I travel across the
country conducting all kinds of training related to family literacy. I am
looking forward to sharing with you some of the concerns and resources "from
the road" as well as information from other sources. Before coming to NCFL I
taught kindergarten in northeast Arkansas and produced satellite delivered
training at the Arkansas Educational Television Network. These trainings
covered everything from in-service training with the American Red Cross for
early childhood caregivers on cardio-pulmonary-resusitation to training
emergency personnel on how to deal with hazardous materials for the Office
of Emergency Services.
To be a good moderator I need your help. Take a moment to introduce yourself
to the list and let us know some of your concerns or interests related to
families and literacy. As we have seen in the last two weeks, the group has
expertise on a wide range of subjects.
If you are new to the internet, I will take a moment to give you some
suggestions about your mail style:
* When you join a list, please introduce yourself to other list members.
*At the end of each message, include your name, e-mail address and your
program affilitation. The header information is not displayed on all mail
systems, and including this information will better allow others to respond
to your message.
*Be concise. Messages more than 2 screens in length are difficult for some
participants to read.
**Before you send a reply, consider if it should go to everyone on the list
or just to the person whose message you are replying to. If you think it
will be of general interest, then send it to the list; if not, be careful to
reply only to the message originator.
*When you are replying to a posted message, it helps readers if you quote the
part of the message (usually not the whole message) that you are replying to.
*E-mail messages typed in all capitals are considered shouing, so be
considerate.
*Be cautious in using sarcasm on the Internet. Comments made in jest may not
always appear that way to other readers.
*Your subject should tell the recipient as much as possible about your
message, without getting too long.
*Remember, e-mail is not particularly private. A glitch can cause the system
to deliver your mail to the wrong recipient on the wrong system.
*Don't pass on chain letters.

I think I am close to the two screen limit, so I will welcome you once again
and look forward to interacting with you soon!
