Kathy: You may be referring to the proposed research study which Ann
Martinez, one of our doctoral students is preparing. With her doctoral
dissertation already approved, and cooperation already pledged from Pat
McKee, USDE, we are encouraged. As soon as we have secured the cooperation
from the Barbara Bush Foundation, which we hope to have this week in
conjunction with the dedication of the George Bush Library on our campus,
we intend to ascertain how programs have remained active after initial
external funding has expired. However, we are broadening the base to be
"family literacy", not just Even Start. Therefore, we would also include
sites from The First Lady's Family Literacy Initiative for Texas and the
similar program in Maine. We also believe researching both the public and
private sectors will be beneficial to everyone, so that's why the interest
in the Barbara Bush Foundation projects.

Findings are a year away, but at least we're moving on it. Once the study
has been completed and the research article submitted, we are committed to
disseminating the findings as widely as possible.
