Subj:	Annenberg/CPB Project Releases The Whole Child: A Caregiver's Guide to
the First
Date:	97-11-07 03:01:16 EST
From:	AOL News

WASHINGTON, Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- As the nation faces the challenges
identified by the October 23 White House Conference on Child Care, the
Annenberg/CPB Project announced the January PBS premiere of its new bilingual
video series and college telecourse, The Whole Child: A Caregiver's Guide to
the First Five Years. The series is produced by Detroit Public Television
(WTVS) in association with the Merrill-Palmer Institute of Wayne State
University, with major funding by the Annenberg/CPB Project.
The Whole Child: A Caregiver's Guide to the First Five Years, is a
13-
part PBS series on developmental education and care from birth to five,
available in both English and Spanish. It is hosted by Joanne Hendrick,
Ph.D., the renowned authority in childcare, and author of the widely-used
textbook from Prentice-Hall, The Whole Child, now in its 6th edition.
The 13 30-minute programs of The Whole Child, with accompanying
textbook
and guides, constitute a one-semester comprehensive course designed for CDA
(Child Development Associate) certification. They also provide a
multipurpose
childcare training tool for professionals, volunteers, and parents.
"The Whole Child is a remarkable example of how video can teach
both the
abstract principles of developmental education, and also the daily nuts-and-
bolts of putting these abstract principles into practice," said Scott
Roberts,
Director of the Annenberg/CPB Project. "By taping the real, unrehearsed
activities of children and caregivers, in real childcare centers, the series
shows at every step of the way how Joanne Hendrick's thoughtful scholarship
comes alive with real kids. It's a perfect example of public educational
television at its finest: timely, quality programs that answer a nationwide
need."
Children and caregivers were taped in ten different Detroit-area
child
care settings, private and public, urban and suburban, corporate, academic,
and home-based, including Head Start facilities. "The program on infant care
alone is enough to generate a nationwide sigh of relief, as pregnant couples
and anxious parents learn what they need to look for in quality infant care,"
said Bob Rossbach, the Executive in Charge of Production at Detroit Public
Television (WTVS). "Detroit gave us a wonderful cross-section of the new
American generation of infants to five-year-olds. We're grateful to all the
childcare centers that opened their doors for the project."
The resulting series has received high praise from the National
Head Start
Association. "Head Start professionals, parents, and volunteers will be
pleased with the availability of the television and video series The Whole
Child," said Sarah M. Greene, CEO of the National Head Start Association.
"The skills that are so important to us -- skills to improve children's
educational, emotional, social, nutritional, and psychological well-being --
are demonstrated here in the clearest possible way, because we see them
through the real interactions of Detroit-area children and caregivers. With
its constant awareness of multicultural issues, and children with special
needs, The Whole Child is a wonderful tool for childcare providers, training
personnel, and parents alike."
The complete course is accompanied by Joanne Hendrick's textbook,
The
Whole Child, as well as a Faculty Guide. In addition, a Student Guide and
Parent Guide are being published in both English and Spanish.
The series is being made available free to all PBS stations around
the
country in a blockfeed on December 1, 1997, with a weekly feed beginning
January 1998. Contact your local PBS station for air dates and times.
Distance learners interested in taking the course for credit can contact
their
local community colleges or 1-800-LEARNER. To buy the series on
videocassette, or to order any of the accompanying print, call the
Annenberg/CPB Project at 1-800-LEARNER.
