It has several websites listed. All of the projects are geared to children and I think family participation. I just checked out the Parent Soup site. There is a "kids resume" section which could be used with children to connect with the welfare to work segment which parents are concerned about. Another section on Holidays offers several inexpensive ideas for hand made gifts. It may be too late to use these with your families for this holiday, but they are not holiday specific. I know most of you are winding 1997 down today and may not read posts until "next year," so I will take this opportunity to wish you happy and safe holidays filled with family and friends. This new round of PSAs will feature "help wanted" ads for volunteers--both generic and for specific cities. These have been posted on KidsCampaigns already and have received good reviews. But now is your opportunity to check them once again to make sure they reflect your issue and city. Go to the Help Wanted section on KidsCampaigns (http://www.kidscampaigns.org/ ) and email any changes or concerns to Jan ASAP at jan@benton.org. If your city isn't yet on the list, now is the time to get organized and develop your own help wanted list so we can pass it along to the Ad Council. Take a look at the ads posted, or work off the Anytown, USA templates to make ads appropriate to your city or town. KIDSCAMPAIGNS DEBUTS "A GIVING TREE" ON PARENTSOUP.COM Check out the latest KidsCampaigns project with Parent Soup (http://www.parentsoup.com/holiday/giving.html)--ideas for starting a family tradition of volunteerism and helping kids celebrate the holidays with acts of kindness in their own communities. HEADS UP--MONITORING THE FUTURE TO BE RELEASED 12/18 The 1997 report of the Monitoring the Future Study will be released by the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan on December 18. This annual survey tracks trends in adolescent drug use for the National Institute of Drug Abuse. Last year's report, posted at http://www.kidscampaigns.org/whoseside/parenting/teendrug.html indicated a strong resurgence in marijuana use and a near doubling in the proportion of 8th graders taking any illicit drug in a one-year period from 1991 (11%) to 1995 (21%). Watch for this year's report on the MTF website at www.isr.umich.edu/src/mtf/index.html or on KidsCampaigns in the section on teens and drugs (http://www.kidscampaigns.org/whoseside/Parenting.) ANOTHER CALL FOR BOOK REVIEWER--GROWING UP DIGITAL Unlike the baby boomers who grew up with TV, Don Tapscott claims that the children of the baby boomers are growing up in an interactive world of Internet entertainment, communications, and learning. If you are interested in reviewing his book "Growing Up Digital" let us know. Email Jan at jan@benton.org. True to form, Tapscott also has a website partner for the book at http://www.growingupdigital.com. COALITION ROUNDUP The Children's Defense Fund urges children's advocates to take advantage of the holiday break to let Senators know how you feel about S.10 (the Violent and Repeat Juvenile Offender Act), due to be voted on in late January. For information, visit their website at http://www.childrensdefense.org. The American Library Association has issued a warning about a growing, orchestrated backlash to providing discounts to schools and libraries to ensure everyone can access computers and the Internet. For information, check out their website at http://www.alawash.org or call 1-800-941-8478. Did you know that crackers are more harmful for kids' teeth than caramels? Sticky foods actually melt away from the mouth faster than some "smart snacks" like cereals, dried fruit or bread. Check out these and other tips for parents and advocates from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry--http://www.aapd.org or via KidsCampaigns Get Connected database. TOTING UP ACTS OF KINDNESS A new-styled contest is being facilitated through the Internet, with moral support from President Clinton and the Corporation for National Service. A group of Newark, N.J. high school students, members of the national volunteer group "Do Something," have issued a challenge to students and high schools across the country to compete for the most "acts of kindness" performed and tallied during the two weeks leading up to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in January. The individual winner will receive a computer, and the winning school will receive a computer lab. Check out their website at www.kjchallenge.org. Many young people are taking advantage of opportunities and encouragement to connect with their communities through public service efforts. Find out how in KidsCampaigns' feature on giving back at holiday time, posted on Parent Soup at http://www.parentsoup.com/holiday/giving.html. A & E AIRS LOCAL HERO BIOGRAPHY A & E will broadcast another "Uncommon American" biography December 28, profiling ordinary Americans volunteering their time and resources on behalf of kids. Find out about KidsCampaigners, people taking action in their communities, on KidsCampaigns at http://www.kidscampaigns.org/Connect/heroes.html. Explore KidsCampaigns for places you can get connected for kids. You can start in the Get Connected section at http://www.kidscampaigns.org/Connect/opportunities.html. And don't forget to email Jan with opportunities for volunteer work on behalf of kids in your town--jan@benton.org. REPORTS ASSESS BENEFITS TO CHILDREN OF IMMIGRANTS According to Cynthia Winder (202-986-2299 x3025) at the Food Action and Research Center, many *legal* immigrants are losing food stamp benefits for their families pursuant to provisions in the new welfare reform law that are taking effect now. According to a November, 1997 report (www.gao.gov/new.items/he98030.pdf), the Government Accounting Office estimates that in fiscal year 1995 about $1.1 billion in AFDC and Food Stamp benefits were provided to households with an *illegal* alien parent for use for his/her citizen child. Nationwide, this accounts for about 3% of AFDC payments and 2% of Food Stamp benefit costs, but the funding clusters in a few states, like California, New York, Texas, and Arizona. FRAC's website is www.frac.org. All GAO reports are accessible via KidsCampaigns Get Smart section, under Government Documents, Other Links, or directly at http://www.gao.gov. Background information on welfare reform and on hunger and nutrition is available on KidsCampaigns in the features "Welfare Reform and America's Children" (http://www.kidscampaigns.org/New/welfare.html) and "Thanksgiving" (http://www.kidscampaigns.org/Hot/thanksgiving.html). BEHIND THE HEADLINES--GLOBAL WARMING With a treaty outlined in Kyoto, attention will be paid to global warming and what, if anything to do about it. While many people would love to see warmer temperatures, especially this time of year, "global warming" is not really about balmy temperatures--it is about the rise in the heat of the atmosphere which leads to increased evaporation of ground water and the oceans. The increased evaporation means dramatic climatic changes, more severe weather, and changes in the distribution of rainfall that can cause drought and famine in some parts of the world and flooding in others. How we address global warming will determine the kind of planet and climate our kids inherit. Environmental concerns are kids' concerns, because kids are the canaries in the mineshaft--more quickly and profoundly affected by environmental hazards and threats than grown-ups. Learn more about environmental concerns specific to kids by checking the "safety/environment" topic on KidsCampaigns' "quick search by topic" on the home page (www.kidscampaigns.org).
