Perhaps subscribers to the NIFL-Family List have suggestions to offer her. You can either post messages on the family list that I can forward to the ESL list or you can post your reply on the ESL list after subscribing to it. Akeel H. Zaheer National Center for Family Literacy Email: azaheer@famlit.org ---------- From: FinnMiller@aol.com To: Multiple recipients of list <nifl-esl@literacy.nifl.gov> Subject: [NIFL-ESL:2338] family literacy Date: Thu, 15 Oct 1998 07:03:36 -0400 (EDT) I've been teaching ESL for several years with adults, and I have a good understanding of how to approach the ever-challenging, multi-level class. This year I've become involved in family literacy, and the term "multi-level" has taken on new meaning. I would love to hear some words of wisdom and keys to success from those who have worked in family literacy. How should one approach working with such a diverse group of learners? In the class (10-12 learners) I've been working with, half the class speaks English and half do not. Included in the English-speaking group are a few with no or low literacy in any language and others at the pre-GED or GED level. Among the non-English speaking group are a couple with advanced degrees in the native language and those with no or low literacy; everyone is at the beginning level in English. Thank you for any insights you might offer. Susan Finn Miller Lancaster, PA finnmiller@aol.com
