I have found that in the family or group literacy situation you can get
much farther by pairing learners or by grouping them into 3 or 4 at most
with one member of the group acting as the facilitator. First
preference should be who has the better command of the language --
whether it is a child with an adult or some other arrangement.
Regardless of the age
groups, the newspaper can be the common ground and the leader ends up
giving subtle signals as to how to use the paper or perform the tasks at
hand.
I, too, worked with a group of ESL people where most were highly
educated and were here as diplomats or dignitaries, but did not feel
comfortable with the language or a newspaper. But in some cases when
paired up with a
child or someone significantly younger, they did seem to click. To
break the ice we'd begin by using the newspaper to check schedules, or
the TV listings or calendar of events and move from these helpful types
of information to actually reading articles of interest.
This isn't much, but I hope it helps.
