Dear NIFL family and health list subscribers,

I received the following post from Cooperative Extension at Penn State. In
case you run into parents who have seen the show and have questions, you'll
know why...

EFNEP Agents, Unit coordinators and other Breastfeeding supporters:

The TV show Chicago Hope is supposed to be airing a story **TONIGHT, Oct.
21** with a breastfed baby dying of dehydration, supposedly due to poor
breastfeeding management. We can assume this will have at least some
negative effect. Use this as an opportunity! The PA Breastfeeding
Coalition has taken some steps to head off the potential negativism and
provide factual information. We need to be prepared to do the same.

Medela has made available a VNR (Video News Releases) to CBS affiliates,
but we need to encourage local CBS stations to air this VNR as soon as
possible. It is called "Breastfeeding Update: Is Baby Getting Enough" I
saw it today and it is a 2 minute spot, very nicely done. There are
shorter segments on the same tape, as many places won't use two minutes of
ANYTHING.

If you get questions or have the opportunity to use this as a starting
point for discussion, remember that for the 3-10 day old infant, 6-10 wet
and/or soiled diapers daily, nursing at least 8 times in 24 hours, and
hearing swallowing during nursing are indications that an infant is getting
the nourishment needed to prevent dehydration and to grow. Remember also
that the old information about limiting time at the breast to 3-5 minutes
is NOT CORRECT. Keep baby nursing for 10 minutes each side if possible.
They more Mom nurses, the more milk she makes.

Thanks for your help.

Judy
