Hi! I'm so glad to have found this listserv! I have been
reading your messages for about a week, but was a little slow
in figuring out how to become connected as this is my first
experience with a listserv.

I am the District Family Literacy Coordinator for South
Carolina's largest school district (55 elementary schools)
and facilitate 10 family literacy programs, write grants,
and write a preschool newsletter which is sent to 11,000
preschool parents. As an Adjunct Professor in Graduate
Education at Furman University, I teach courses on Parent
Involvement and Family Reading. I frequently serve on state
adult and family literacy committees and write
articles for journals.

I have two concerns that I'd like suggestions with.
1. This August, I received an EFF Grant to train my staff
in developing a training model for EFF with Meta Potts.
Staff will particpate in 3 workshops , write EFF Lessons
and Reflection Logs, and give Meta and me feedback about
how EFF is working out in their classrooms.
We started all this in October.

My question:My staff is worried about spending too much
time on EFF and not enough on meeting students' requests
for working towards their GED. Philosophically we all know
that there is life beyond the GED and EFF has good answers
for it. Does the staff/student realization about the
signifigance of EFF come with time and practice--or?

Also, can field directors or observers give me advice about
being a good observer/mentor of my teachers?

2. I'm on the state committee to develop a new adult ed
and family lit plan for the Workforce Investment Act.
Is anyone else involved in this as a family lit representative?
Can we communicate further?
