The Emergent Literacy Project at the University of Idaho was originally
funded by the U..S. Department of Health and Human Services, Head Start
Bureau, for the purpose of providing training in family and emergent
literacy practices for families and staff. During the past three years this
project conducted 11 two and one-half day train-the-trainer workshops
throughout the western United States. In addition, they conducted 18 one to
two day workshops for individual programs and school districts. The
trainers have also presented at numerous national and regional conferences.
The Emergent Literacy Project is still available to provide training in
emergent literacy practices for families and classrooms. Workshops can be
provided in Family Literacy, Emergent Literacy at the Preschool Level,
Emergent Literacy at the Kindergarten and First Grade Levels. The training
can be tailored to meet the needs of each program, and is supported by the
following materails, which are currently being used nationally and
internationally by family literacy and early childhood programs:
Video #1: Emergent Literacy:What Is It and Why Should We Do It?
Video #2: Creating a Print Rich Classroom Environment
