DISCUSSION MODERATOR, December 7-11, 1998

Dale Lipschultz is a Senior Program Associate with the Illinois
Literacy
Resource Development Center (ILRDC). For the past two years, Dale
has
worked extensively with the 13 library literacy programs in the
Literacy In
Libraries Across America (LILAA) Initiative, providing technical
assistance
in the areas of learner assessment, program evaluation, curriculum
development, tutor training, staff development and strategic
planning.

During this same period, Dale worked closely with the American
Library
Association and the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund to develop
links
between library literacy programs, technical assistance providers
and
ALA.
Dale's background includes practitioner experience and academic
training in
children's literacy development, family literacy programming, adult
learning and the emerging field of library literacy.

ABOUT THE DISCUSSION LIST
>
The list is owned by the ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach
Services,
as an outreach of its three-year, $4 million initiative, Literacy in
Libraries
Across America (LILAA), funded by the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest
Fund.
Topics address adult literacy issues, especially those of interest
to
public libraries.

ABOUT THE LILA WALLACE-READER'S DIGEST FUND
http://www.wallacefunds.org

The Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund is a national, private
grantmaking foundation located in New York City. Its mission is to
invest in programs that enhance the cultural life of communities and
encourage people to make the arts and culture an active part of
their
everyday lives.

The American Library Association has received Fund support to
strengthen the work of libraries participating in this initiative
and
the field of library literacy programs. One goals of this initiative
is to improve adult literacy
instruction in public libraries. With Fund support, public libraries
in four states are increasing the quality and availability of their
literacy programs and instruction that is relevant to the needs and
life experiences of adult learners. These libraries are
strengthening
small group instruction and computer technology to better serve
learners, as well as improving their capacity to measure learning
gains and document learner achievements.
