Is your community ready for the 21st Century?
Are workers getting the skills they need to get and keep good jobs
throughout their career?
Are workers getting the skills they need to succeed in those jobs?
Are local employers getting the skilled workers they need to stay
competitive?
Join Vice President Al Gore
in a televised satellite Summit on "21st Century Skills for 21st Century
Jobs" with national business, labor, education, government and local
community leaders on January 12, 1999 1:30 - 3:00 PM Eastern Time,
by holding a local discussion and viewing the broadcast.
You can spur action in your community and across the nation to address these
challenges.
Summit Background and Purpose. As we prepare for the 21st Century,
knowledge is becoming our greatest strategic resource and learning our
greatest strategic skill. In this new era, we must give everyone the
opportunity to upgrade their skills and gain new knowledge to get and keep
good jobs. In workplaces of every kind, knowledge and the ability to use
information and technology will be the key to a business and an individual's
success.
America has a history of taking bold, imaginative steps to empower men and
women to thrive in an ever-changing landscape. Public schools, community
colleges, land grant colleges, and the G.I. Bill reflect our nation's
commitment to help all of our people pursue the American Dream. Recently,
the Clinton-Gore Administration has made the greatest investment in higher
education since the G. I. Bill. With expanded Pell Grants for low-income
students and working adults, Hope Scholarships and Lifetime Learning Tax
Credits for middle and working class individuals and families, and a new
Workforce Investment Act, we are opening the doors to college and
post-secondary training. Communities across the nation are finding new ways
to increase opportunity and security for adults through lifelong learning
and
to help employers find the skilled workers they need to succeed in a
changing
economy.
The Vice President is convening this Summit to signal a national commitment
to help working adults acquire 21st Century skills and to forge and expand
partnerships among businesses, institutions of higher education, labor
unions, and others to find new ways to help Americans learn, work, and
succeed in the 21st Century.
How to Participate. You can participate in the Vice President's Summit by
convening local leaders to discuss these issues in your community, view the
Vice President's broadcast, and share your ideas with communities across the
nation. For more information on how to participate, check the web site
vpskillsummit.org or call 1-800-USA LEARN.
