Currently over 120 volunteer tutors work with our teachers and 400 students in six different locations in Manhattan. The Director of Education is responsible for managing all educational programs of Literacy Partners, Inc. RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Direct educational programs: Manage several educational programs directly. Reporting to the Executive Director, responsible for overall management of all instructional programs of Literacy Partners, Inc. including supervision of the Associate Director for Instructional Programs, recruitment, orientation, retention, counseling, leadership and evaluation efforts. Provide department fiscal and administrative management as part of senior management team. Create an environment and provide a mechanism for ongoing staff dialogue/discussion to advance program plans and strategies. Supervise student outreach/recruitment and orientation program, student database, volunteer management and learner assessment team. Organize staff development activities. Supervise the Agency’s current program evaluation project and coordinate it with other key managerial staff. 2. Direct student enrollment and expansion Expand the programs and services offered by the Education Department. Assess new program opportunities and determine, with staff and Board, new directions and new or expanded programs which will enable Literacy Partners, Inc. to enroll 1,000 students in FY 2001 and which will increase by 30% the number of hours of instruction the average student receives. 3. Participate as management staff: Collaborate with the Director of Development, the Director of Finance and Administration and program staff to develop funding proposals and reports to public and private funders. Prepare reports for the Board of Directors. Participate in and manage projects to implement LPI’s long range strategic plan. QUALIFICATIONS: Primary interest in education with a focus on adult learning and instructional techniques. Experience demonstrating a broad understanding of adult literacy education programs, as well as management experience – supervision of staff and skill in building a team to produce an effective learning community. Ability to be flexible, test assumptions, engage in dialogue about instructional models and develop programs of excellence and substance. Should possess the ability to write well and handle fiscal accountability of educational programs. Person should work well with a diverse group, including staff, board, students, and volunteers. Advanced degree in Education and/or a BA plus 6 years of equivalent additional experience. Salary competitive, plus excellent benefits.
