At the Blue Gargoyle Family Learning Project, we have begun to award
certificates for attending our library sessions and for doing 10 hrs of
parent-child activities ("completing parent-child learning sessions"). We
make the certificates (with borders) ourselves using our simple
word-processing software. Note: With perfect attendance, parents do 4-5 hrs
of PACT per week.

Once parents get 2 certificates, they can select a prize that is primarily
intended as a TREAT for the PARENT + a small treat for child:
e.g.
a relaxation set: bath oil/bubble bath for parent, a candle, bubble bath for
child
a pen set: a nice pen + a nice memo book
a pocket dictionary + a pen + a small coloring book for child
gift certificates for Pizza Hut
etc.

The certificates alone have proven to be powerful incentives, although the
prizes have also generated excitement. Parents proudly save the certificates
or post them at home, and look forward to selecting a prize. (And who among
us doesn't want to get a treat for ourselves??)

Note: Prizes are donated by local businesses and individuals or bought at the
dollar store and paid for by money raised through our own small fundraisers.
