I have been working with the women in our local detention center for the
past couple of months. I had received many great ideas from this list
for implementing Family Literacy for incarcerated individuals. I have
taped the women reading "The Velveteen Rabbit" and "Are You My Mother?"
and have sent copies of the videos to the women's children along with a
copy of the book. The response has been great from both my students and
their children. I am allowed to take laptop computers into the cell
when I work with these women and have found that they are receptive to
using the educational software programs that I have available. I also
am allowed to take in a small TV/VCR to show them parenting videos.

I have used a parenting video program that has not been well received by
these women. The families portrayed in the videos are very upper middle
class who live in lovely homes. My students cannot relate to these
families. I have tried to locate parenting material that will be more
"real" to my students, but I have had no success. Does anyone have any
ideas?

Also, does anyone know of any grants available for doing literacy
projects with incarcerated individuals? Any ideas will be greatly
appreciated.
