Everything is going well with my community literacy work ,and the Family Reading Partnership is now quite well established. I don't know if I had founded it already when we met. I'm enclosing an overview of my latest project. Hope all is well with you and your family. I have nice memories of your trainings in Cortland and Syracuse. Best regards, Brigid PS How would I get information about presenting at the next NIFL conference? Dear Literacy Friends, I thought you might enjoy knowing more about a new initiative of the New York State Association for the Education of Young Children. We have just launched phase one of the Welcome to School Book Project and want to invite New York State elementary schools to join in. We are also happy to share the idea with other states. Please find below an overview of the project. To receive an order form, send your school's name, address, phone, fax and county to: nysaeyc@capital.net For more information about the Welcome to Schgool Book Project in general, contact me: Brigid Hubberman, Director of the Family Reading Partnership and coordinator of the NYSAEYC Welcome to School Book Project. WELCOME TO SCHOOL BOOK PROJECT OVERVIEW In an effort to promote family reading practices and encourage early experiences with books across New York State, start home/school relationships off on a positive note, and help children make friends with books, the New York State Association for the Education of Young Children (NYSAEYC) is launching statewide, the Welcome to School Book Project. We hope to reach 50,000 new kindergartners this year. The Welcome to School Book Project will provide schools throughout New York State with new books for new kindergartners for a $2.00 cost per book. The books will be given to children as gifts from their new schools at kindergarten registration in the spring. The Welcome to School Book Project will be organized at the state level and implemented through NYSAEYC Affiliates. Affiliates are contacting schools in their regions this fall to invite them to participate. In addition schools can order directly from NYSAEYC. About the Book Feathers for Lunch by Lois Ehlert is a 36-page, 7” x 11”, paperback book featuring beautiful full-color illustrations, a large font, easy rhyming text, and a playful, humorous story line. Northeastern birds and plant life are featured and named throughout. A special section in the back highlights the individual birds, their characteristics and their habitats. Retail cost is $7 but we are getting a large quantity discount ,bringing the cost to $2.00 per book for schools. Each book will have a nameplate with a place for the child’s name and school. It will also acknowledge the NYSAEYC. Schools will be provided with a master of a “Dear Reader-To-Be” message from author Lois Ehlert, and information about making books a part of everyday family life.
