I work with the family literacy program at the Durham County Literacy
Council in North Carolina. We have a program called Parents' Part in which
parent and child pairs meet for six week, two times a week learning basic
word processing skills and using early literacy software.

This weekend we are doing an open house at our facility in conjunction with
a local school. In order to give parent and child a bit of exposure to what
we do in our family literacy programs, we are setting up "stations" for each
pair to go to. At one station there will be a book read and children must
answer questions regarding what they heard. At another, we will have Reader
Rabbit loaded on the computer and they will complete one letter land. We
will have a station that the parent will have to ask their child a "journal"
question and the parent will be responsible for doing some formatting on the
computer with their child's response. Several more stations will also be
staffed with volunteers to help with instruction. After a task is
completed, they will "earn" literacy dollars in order to purchase books to
continue their interest in learning in the home.

Our hope is that in this short time, we will expose the children and parents
to the things that DCLC has to offer. They will have the opportunity to
sign up for a Parents' Part class at this time and they also learn that the
family learning computer lab is open to them to use independently.

This is the first open house of this kind that we have done although we are
modeling after another that was done at a local community center. If you
have further questions regarding our program, please feel free to contact me
privately.
