My question pertains to the UK government's intention to expand its National Literacy Strategy (primary school) to the secondary level. (High School-- starting at Year 7- Yr 13). In a recent article, (Secondary Teachers' Views and Actions Concerning Literacy Teaching, Educational Review, vol. 51,no. 3, 1999) Maureen Lewis and David Wray researched the level of interest in literacy and the teaching strategies used among teachers in secondary schools throughout the UK. They found that the teaching methods used reduced students' encounters with text and limited the students' use of their skills. Although there was support among teachers for literacy instruction, teachers were not confident about involving literacy in their subject areas. With government pressure to include literacy and not just within English classes, teachers must find the appropriate strategies for their subject areas. I would be interested to hear of some examples in other countries where literacy is a feature of the secondary school policy and of the various ways that literacy is integrated into multiple-subject areas. I would love to be put in contact with anyone researching these questions.
