I am newly appointed to serve on NYS Reading and Literacy Partnership, a new task force/coalition/organization. It has been convened by NYS Governor Pataki and NYS Commissioner of Education Mills to apply for REA, and to create a vision for "reading excellence" in our state. I am pleased that there are a number of voices in the organization speaking to the importance of focus on early childhood and family literacy. I also serve on the New York State Alliance for Family Literacy, itself a fairly new organization. We are working in close partnership with the NYS Reading and Literacy Partnership to assure that literacy efforts, both family and school, are coordinated. As we are still in the early stages of development, so I look forward to hearing what other states are planning and doing. I would like to add another question. How are other states with REA coalitions involving businesses and private foundations?
