NIFL-Family Colleagues,
Over the past year, three surveys have been conducted using adult
education electronic lists and interactive Web pages. The purpose of the
surveys has been to determine a name (or names) for a system of adult
education in the United States which those in our field, including adult
learners, might find agreeable. The preliminary survey enabled
determining if an online survey was practical. The second helped to
generate many names from the field and to narrow them to seven. The
third, conducted in October 2000, has enabled us to select the best.
940 people responded to the survey.174 (19%) are male; 740 (81%) are
female. They are from all over the United States, although most are from
the east and midwest/central part of the country:
Southwest 105 11%
Northwest 78 8%
Midwest/Central 267 29%
Southeast 180 20%
Northeast 250 27%
Other 54 5%
Respondents have the following role(s) in adult education, and many
have more than one role. Most were teachers, tutors, instructors and/or
administrators.
teacher, tutor or instructor 449 49%
current or former adult learner or adult new reader 107 12%
learning center or program administrator 329 36%
state or national administrator 51 6%
researcher 76 8%
undergraduate or graduate student 121 13%
staff development provider 184 20%
funder 13 1%
librarian 34 4%
literacy program/agency board member 91 10%
Other 140 15%
Two names are clearly above the rest, and deserve special consideration as
we -- a community of adult education practitioners and learners --
decide how to make adult education a well-resourced system in the league
with K-12 and higher education. They are:
Adult Learning and Literacy (ALL)
and
Adult Education (AE)
These might be described as:
The Adult Learning and Literacy System or just "ALL",as in "K-12, ALL, and
higher ed"
or as the Adult Education System, or just Adult Education, as in "K-12,
higher and adult education"
What's next?
Many people will be relieved to hear that I will not be conducting another
survey. I think at this point the National Coalition for Literacy may
wish to review the results of the surveys and vote. This body includes
representatives of all the national organizations in our field and, in my
view, is the right body to make this decision should they choose to.
Until that time, I will use the name Adult Learning and Literacy, the
choice which had the most votes in the combined categories of excellent
and good.
Here is the breakdown on the voting:
