Produced by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Parent Teacher Association. http://registerevent.ed.gov/downlink/event-flyer.asp?intEventID=145#Viewing The U.S. Department of Education and the National PTA agree that family involvement is key to a child's success in school, and that parent involvement improves student performance. Cultural and language barriers can sometimes prevent immigrant parents from feeling welcome at their children's schools and from becoming actively involved in their education. With steadily growing numbers of Hispanic students now enrolled in schools around the country, schools and parent organizations need to do a better job of involving Spanish-speaking families. Live via-satellite, the U.S. Department of Education and the National PTA are partnering to produce a one-hour interactive teleconference for parent-teacher associations, schools and community groups interested in improving outreach to Spanish-speaking families. The focus will be on practical ideas and best practices that can be adapted locally. Hosted by U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley and National PTA President Ginny Markell, the workshop will explore a number of major themes, including how: * Successful outreach involves making all parents feel welcome and valued; * One-on-one contacts and parent workshops are key tools for involving parents; * The school and district can better support teachers and staff with specialized professional development, including translators, Spanish materials and other resources; * Flexibility in scheduling and other matters can be key when conducting programs for working families; and * Strong home-school-community partnerships can maximize effective outreach. http://registerevent.ed.gov/downlink/event-flyer.asp?intEventID=145#Viewing
