As a Jehovah's Witnesses who doesn't celebrate any
holidays but have to take the day off anyway, we plan
ahead with projects that must be done or a special
play day. Many Witnesses (and other religious groups)
like to make these days off as family day to do
evangelising work or to impress onto children the
needs of others such as the homeless, ill children in
the hospital, being a friend to someone from school,
or visiting and learning about the local animal
protective society. Learning some history of the area
is great fun for the childern. If the day is marked by
something special, such as personally becoming a
member of the historicl society or children's museum
where they personally hand over money and get
recognition- and papers or a card or a T-shirt, then
the child will have a terrific time. I've found
something concrete is more important than a lot of
fuss over making visits to relatives they hardly know
and won't till they grow up and decide if they want to
know them more or just moaning or flopping around
while others are preparing an elaborate meal the
children couldn't care less about. Just stock up on
snacks and have a movie marathon of the kids'
favourites. Stay in your pajamas all day. Throw quilts
and pillows on the floor. I've never had trouble with
children if I keep it simple and not pushing to
accomplish too much. Planning ahead, whether with the
holiday theme in mind or not, is the secrete. And KISS!
