FOOD STAMP LEAVERS IN ILLINOIS: How They Are Doing Two Years Later -
New study from Mathematica is one of the few to examine the status of
this diverse group. About half of those who exited in 1997 were
employed two years later, while more than half had incomes below the
poverty line. Researchers found food insecurity with hunger evident
among one-fourth of the leavers. Those who left the program because
of sanctions experienced severe and multiple hardships. The findings,
which mirror those of a similar study of food stamp leavers in
Phoenix, Arizona, point to national concerns about food stamp leavers.
