First Lady to Host
Book Festival

Laura Bush will host the Library of Congress' national book festival to
promote reading slated here on September 8 and is chairing the library's
national reading promotion campaign, Telling America's Stories. The First
Lady says she hopes the effort will "underscore the importance of reading
and inspire Americans of all ages to read more." Event planners are putting
together a day-long festival filled with songs, readings, and of course,
books. The library's conservators will offer tips on preserving family
albums and computer staffers will demonstrate the library's various Web
sites. For more see http://www.loc.gov/today/pr/2001/01-070.html

VA's Adult Ed
Task Force Boosts
Family Literacy

Virginia's Task Force on Adult Education and Literacy recommended to the
State Board last week that Virginia create its own family literacy grant
program, starting at $1M. The task force report also recommends that the
state establish a Family Literacy Center to identify best practices in
family literacy, provide training to educators who deliver such services,
and develop materials for use throughout the state. An allocation of
$300,000 would be required. Other recommendations contained in a new task
force report include making family literacy a priority and placing Even
Start within the Virginia Department of Education's Office of Adult
Education and Literacy. Contact ythayer@mail.vak12ed.edu
