How many of you are out there using this? What has been your success with TV-411? I like the personal "testimonies" from the adult learners as they share what they have learned and how they are using their new knowledge to improve in their roles as family members, workers, and community members. http://www.tv411.org/ I have put some information about them below. They are currently working with a number of local family literacy programs such as Even Start Partnerships and Reach Out and Read to better address the needs of program staff and parent participants through the implementation of learner-centered multimedia teaching/learning activities. ALMA is a literacy service that combines media -television, video, print, and the world wide web -- with a grassroots distribution system to make literacy learning available in flexible ways in home and community settings to the millions of adults across the nation who need to improve their basic reading, writing and math skills. The overall mission of the project is to provide universal access to literacy and to increase community capacity to provide literacy services. ALMA has created a television series, TV411, and accompanying print and web materials that are as entertaining as they are educationally sound. In creating these materials, they conducted in-depth research on why individuals want to improve their literacy and numeracy levels. Helping their children at school, optimizing healthcare for themselves and their families and not getting cheated out of their money were the hottest topics. As a result, all ALMA's teaching of basic skills is embedded in these themes. TV411 materials is comprised of: * 20-part video series with corresponding print and web materials. * six to eight segments of four to six minutes in length in each half-hour video, * a magazine format which combines recognizable television genres -- situation comedy, documentary, sports entertainment, and talk show. The parenting and adult education segments cover such topics as: * choosing a school that's right for your child, * preparing for a doctor's visit with your child, * using real life math to figure out how many diapers you need to buy * and finding resources to help parents deal with teenagers. And parent and child together segments show real-life adult learners working directly with children in * reading a story, * creating a family album, * or figuring out the budget for snacks at a baseball game. Basic literacy and/or numeracy skills are embedded in each segment. ALMA provides staff development to these programs on the integration of multimedia resources and activities into their staff development efforts, parenting groups, basic skills classes, tutorials and/or home visit components. ALMA's work with parent-oriented programs nationwide is helping providers and practitioners to better achieve their goals of helping parents improve their own basic skills, their parenting skills and the educational development of their children.
