Undocumented Immigrants In 7 States Set Context For Plan
According to the newest information released by the Immigration and
Naturalization Service (for 1996), 83 per cent of undocumented residents
have settled in seven states that traditionally have the largest immigrant
populations: CA; TX; NY; FL; IL; NJ and AZ. An estimated 40 percent of
current resident illegal immigrants lived in California that year. Estimates
also showed that more than half of the nationwide undocumented immigrant
population came from Mexico. The data provide an interesting context for
adult education programs reviewing contingencies to plan for if the amnesty
proposal that the Administration is considering, which focuses on Mexicans,
becomes reality. For proposal see Thursday Notes 7/19/01.

CTC Program Gets 1230 Applications
The Community Technology Centers (CTC) program received 1230 eligible
applications for $32.3 M available now for one-year projects. The record
number of applications represents a 150% increase over the number received
in 1999. Currently, 103 review panels are slated for the week of August
20-29. The review process appropriately will be conducted using
technology--as a series of nationwide teleconferences of expert panelists.
The review also will pilot an "e-readers" process that allows reviewers to
respond electronically. Decisions about the anticipated 170-190 awards are
expected this fall. Meanwhile, proposals for the future of CTC are still
under consideration by Congress. Contact mary.legwin@ed.gov

MD Surveys Technology For Statewide Plan Now Under Construction
Maryland is conducting its first technology survey of adult education and
family literacy programs, state director Patricia Bennett says. Survey
results will serve as the basis for the statewide Technology Plan for Adult
Education on the drawing board. The survey is designed to identify hardware
and connectivity capacity available at each site, along with teachers'
skills and training needs. It can be completed online. Contact: ira@umbc.edu

Task Force Seeks Nominees For Youth Committee
The Department of Labor is seeking nominations for the Youth Advisory
Committee of the Presidential Task Force on Employment of Adults with
Disabilities. The advisory committee will provide perspectives on how to
address education and employment of young people with disabilities.
Nominations are due September 14. Contact Richard Horne at 202/693-4939 or
see http://www.wais.access.gpo.gov for the Federal Register of August 3.
