The points about public schools and their responsiveness to parents,
especially parents whose own educations are limited, are well taken.
After eight years in an Even Start Family Literacy Project, I moved to an
REA Family Literacy Project based in an elementary school. Actually being
on the school staff has been wonderful. I attend the school's staff
meetings. Elementary teachers attend occasional family literacy staff
meetings to help plan services for families. School teachers visit homes
and family literacy teachers visit classrooms. It hasn't always been easy
but we have been able to work together to make some real changes in the
school that make our family literacy parents feel more welcome and
appreciated. I'm especially pleased by my school staff's efforts to make
their written communications readable for adults who may not have college
level reading skills.

I say the more communication between public schools and family literacy
programs the better! We have much to learn from one another!
