Andy Hartman
Moves On

National Institute for Literacy (NIFL) director Andy Hartman announced
August 29 his intention to become Director of Policy and Research with a new
Colorado think tank/advocacy organization. The unnamed organization's agenda
will focus on "improving the lives of children and families in Colorado."
Hartman says he and his wife have nurtured a plan to move West. No date for
the transition to Denver was available at press time.

FL Assists TX
In Curriculum
Development

Florida this spring came to Texas' aid by sending team of curriculum experts
to help pilot Florida's own adult education curriculum in 19 sites located
throughout Texas' four regions. Florida sent three experts--in ABE, ESL and
GED/ASE--to help Texas work with the performance-based curriculum model,
which Texas will adapt to its particular needs. Texas set up a chat room for
teachers in the pilots to talk directly to their mentors in Florida. When it
offered GED training, Florida invited Texas pilot site staff and about 10
Texans participated. As successful as the partnership is, Florida's effort
is not entirely selfless. Florida hopes for reciprocal sharing when Texas
completes its adult education credentialing project next year. Contact

English For All
Series Available
Free To States

Here's something for almost nothing-with potential for a big payoff.
OVAE-funded project Cyberstep is providing masters of their new English for
All video series as well as the CD-ROM version free to every state and
outlying area. States also will be able to make VHS copies at cost from a
selected video duplication house in Sacramento and/or copy the CDs.
Moreover, the English for All website will be open soon offering about 400
pages of related print materials for ESL instruction for download as PDF
files. Contact <mailto:jfleischman@scoe.net>

Are Kids Spending
More Time with
Mom and Dad?

Good news for working parents. Kids--in two-parent families at least--are
spending more time with Mom and Dad than kids did 20 years ago, a recent
University of Michigan study says. This is in spite of a 13% increase in the
number of working mothers in the same period. In 1997, kids spent 31 hours
per week with Mom compared to 25 hours in l981. Time with Dad rose from 19
to 23 hours. Researchers at the University's Institute for Social Research
emphasize the importance of their study because significant parental
involvement has been shown to help children develop intellectually,
socially, and emotionally. See http://www.msnbc.com/news/571135.asp
