Thanks to Harriet with Texas Family Literacy for this one….. Nancy
Five nationally syndicated cartoonists have written comic strips
to promote the theme of literacy on September 8, International
Literacy Day. Jim Davis, creator of Garfield; Greg Evans,
creator of Luann; Tony Cochran, creator of Agnes; Jef Mallett,
creator of Frazz; and Mark O'Neill, creator of Potluck Parish,
are participating in this event.
The cartoonists are involved because of their personal
commitment to the cause of literacy. The five comic strips
will appear on Saturday, September 8th, designated as
International Literacy Day in 1966 by the United Nations
Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
International Literacy Day sensitizes and mobilizes
international public opinion to elicit their interest and active
support for literacy activities. Collectively, the comic strips
will run in nearly 2,600 newspapers internationally.
"We are very fortunate to have cartoonists of the caliber of
Jim Davis engaged in this movement. Their involvement will
only help underline the importance of literacy skills," said
Lisa Bennett-Garrison, Executive Director of California
Literacy, Inc., the sponsor of the event.
The hotline number for the National Institute for Literacy
will be displayed in Agnes. Any individual calling the
number will be connected with a nearby literacy program
to either volunteer as a tutor or enroll as a student.
[SUGGESTION: Find out if your local paper carries any
of these comic strips. Use this as an opportunity to
make a tie-in promoting adult literacy -- and your program
specifically -- via a letter to the editor or article in your
local paper on September 8.]
