For those of you in family literacy who are wanting to try out the Equipped
for the Future Framework within a meaningful context, you and your students
might want to take Nancy's suggestion and read the current Connect for Kids
Weekly--September 10, 2001, and then look for matching themes in the EFF Role
Maps. For example,

**Juggling Work and Family -- Interactive!
Whether you're a Mom, Dad or caretaker, chances are you're struggling to
balance the demands (and joys) of work and family. On Sunday, September
16th, PBS airs a program for all of us -- and pairs it with an interactive
site where you can find out just how many other Americans share your
predicament and what they are doing about it.

Now, Look at the Role Maps. The Worker Map defines further the Broad Area of
Responsibility, Plan and Direct Personal and Professional Growth, with the
Key Activity which states this goal: Balance and support work, career, and
personal goals.
The Parent/Family Member Map defines further the Broad Area of
Responsibility, Meet Family Needs and Responsibilities, with the Key Activity
which states this goal: Balance priorities to meet multiple needs and
responsibilities.

Is there a theme here? Which standards might you choose as a focus for this
important theme? I might begin with Reflect and Evaluate, but others might
begin elsewhere.

Just an idea to illustrate how current the EFF Framework really is.
