None of the 13 appropriation bills have been approved by Congress. Five have been passed by both houses and another four have been passed by the House of Representatives. No action has occurred on the two biggest bills, Defense and Labor-HHS-Education. With Congress understandably focused on defense matters, sources say it's likely that labor, health and human services, and education programs will face a series of continuing resolutions at current levels. Final action may come as late as Thanksgiving. Census 2000: Nearly Half Nation's Latinos Are Mexicans The number of Mexicans in the US more than doubled in the last ten years, according to recently released Census 2000 data. That increase drove a nearly 13 million-person spike in total numbers of US Hispanics over the last decade, the data show. The new Census indicates that 20.6 million people of Mexican origin made up more than half the nation's Latinos. Half of the US Hispanic population in 2000 lived in just two states: California and Texas. California was home to 11.0 million Latinos and Texas, to 6.7 million. About three in four Hispanics lived in the seven states that had one million or more Latinos each: California; Texas; New York; Florida; Illinois; Arizona and New Jersey. In New Mexico, 42% of the total population was Hispanic in 2000, the highest proportion of any state http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/2001/cb01-81.html 19-Year Volunteer Gets Laubach Award George Anne Sparks from the Blue Ridge Literacy Council (BRLC) in Hendersonville, North Carolina has won the 2001 Patricia Crail Brown Award for exemplary service as a literacy volunteer, Laubach announced September 5. Sparks, who has tutored for 19 years introduced computers to BRLC by donating her own. Her computer knowledge and grant writing skills have helped bring new technology to BRLC and to create the council's first website.
