If you really want to reach children from at-risk environments, there will be no substitute for word-of-mouth. Statistically you can expect that up to 40% of the parents will be unable to read at a functional level. As a result, they often avoid print, meaning that posters, fliers, newspaper articles etc. will have little impact. If you're not familiar enough to approach the parents personally, make contact with the people at Head Start (pre-schoolers often have older siblings), the job service or other service agencies who can make the personal contact for you. If teachers have a good relationship with the parents, they may also be willing to make personal phone calls for you. Recruiting children quickly is a good goal but unless you have a structure already in place, it may be something that just takes time. By the way, several of the messages on the listserv recently have had attachments with no reference to them in the message. Are these attachments being sent deliberately? Am I missing something by not opening them?
